The Lotus and Butterfly represent our symbols of “Triumph Over Adversity”, not just from addictions but overcoming any adversity. Everyone goes through difficult life changing experiences for which this symbol can have relevance. A painful truth keeps one in the darkness. Losses of all kinds bring emotional pain. At some point the darkness becomes so unbearable that the willingness to make changes begins.
The lotus flower begins its journey in the mud and muck at the water's bottom, grows up through the darkness, and when it reaches the surface emerges as a closed bud. It has the potential to grow and blossom in the sunlight. It floats peacefully on the water. It rises and falls as the water rises and falls. At night it closes up until it is reawakened by next day’s light.
Opening to new possibilities of the new day, the lotus flows with the changes. Maybe we too can live with some sense of serenity and peace, opening ourselves to the light of day and the possibilities that lie there.
The butterfly starts out in the darkness of a cocoon. It must twist and turn and struggle to get free. But if it were not for that struggle the butterfly would not develop the strength necessary to fly. The struggle itself creates the transformation necessary to achieve freedom. So too is it with addicts and those facing adversity. Strength and courage develop when they are willing to face adversity and accept help to overcome it.
